Miyajima Guide

Miyajima is an island.
There is no bridge connecting the island to the mainland, so it can only be reached by ferry or high-speed boat from the Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal or nearby ports.
Miyajima is best explored on foot, as parking is limited and many areas are not accessible by car. Most visitors choose to walk or take local buses to get around the island.

Travel between the World Heritage Sites of Hiroshima and Miyajima in just 45 minutes.

Aquanet Hiroshima operates the World Heritage Sea Route — a direct boat that takes you from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to Miyajima in just 45 minutes. It’s the fastest and easiest way to travel between these two World Heritage Sites, with no transfers required. In addition to one way and round trip tickets, we also offer a convenient package ticket for those heading to Miyajimaguchi after visiting Miyajima, or returning to Peace Park from Miyajimaguchi after exploring the island.

Itsukushima Shrine

Itsukushima Shrine is located on Itsukushima (Miyajima) Island in Hiroshima Bay. It was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1996. The shrine was originally founded in 593 AD by Saeki no Kuramoto as a small, modest structure. In the late Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori rebuilt it using the shinden-zukuri architectural style, forming the basis of the current structure. Today, six buildings, including the main hall, oratory, and corridors, are designated as National Treasures of Japan.

Mount Misen

Mount Misen, located behind Itsukushima Shrine, is the highest peak on the island, reaching an altitude of 535 meters. The mountain is blanketed in untouched primeval forest and holds deep spiritual significance. It is believed that Shingon Buddhism was first practiced here by Kobo Daishi (Kukai), and many ancient legends have been passed down through generations. From the observation deck at the summit, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea and the cityscape of Hiroshima. Please note: The ropeway can become very crowded during peak seasons. If you plan to use it, allow extra time and schedule your trip accordingly.
